Boy Makes Music - Oak Island EP

"Mid-19th century newspaper stories recount that in 1795, young Donald Daniel McInnis discovered a circular depression on the south eastern end of the island with an adjacent tree which had a tackle block on one of its overhanging branches. McInnis, with the help of friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan, excavated the depression and discovered a layer of flagstones a few feet below. On the pit walls there were visible markings from a pick. As they dug down they discovered layers of logs at about every ten feet (3 m). They abandoned the excavation at 30 feet (10 m)." - Wikipedia entry for Oak Island.

Here is a lovely pair of ambient tracks from Sackville Nova Scotia's Boy Makes Music. Here he has made a 24 minute soundtrack to Oak Island, a tiny island on the south shore of the province.

This music may not make you think of treasure, but it will definitely make you think of something valuable, long-lost.

Alexandre Bilodeau - bonze deluxe

Alexandre Bilodeau -- quirky techno superstar -- leads a relentless attack on Atlantic Canada yet again with this fabulous Bonze Deluxe EP.

Five solid tracks that will definitely get your head nodding, if not your booty shaking.

...

Just checked "BONZE" in the dictionary, and apparently it means "a buddhist monk."

So I guess that means that if you don't dig this EP, be prepared or Bilodeau is going to come to your house and get all buddhist on your ass.

The Dry Heeves - ...And I'll Call Rusty

"The Dry Heeves take musical bits from cultures around the world, and try to find ways to put them together in which no one else would. Some tracks are intended to be pure silliness, but others take on a more serious feel and attempt to make strong statements. It gives a breadth and depth to what they are doing in an experimental genre that is often overlooked." (Laura B. - Sublevel 203)

"The Dry Heeves are cultural analysts who use electronic music as their dissemination medium of choice. Under the direction of C. MacDonald and J. D. MacNeil, the Dry Heeves hail from Meat Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Their meditatively eccentric compositions can be overwhelming at first, but once assimilated, they become invigorating, cleansing, genuinely hilarious and frequently gratifying. Shifting from rock to pop, to tribal, to folk, to metal, to ambient, to noise and to full-blown electronica, the Dry Heeves take the listener on a bizarre journey that is laughable, disturbing, and strange."

A wonderful new collection of tunes from Moncton's biggest lover of the sine wave, Paranerd. If peaceful melody makes you happy, then you should hear this.

Sleepy Rabbit - A Single Little Elephant EP

A peaceful trip through the wobbly, beat-driven mind of the Sleepy Rabbit.

From the notes: "Dust sensors have destroyed the last few specks on the poor rabbit's little record. They've surrounded him now and are moving for the kill. His only smooth hope now-- a sudden slow motion sleep strike. His last escape might be a single little elephant."

I'm not sure I understand the liner notes, but hey, with music this dreamy, who's concerned about coherent meaning?

Reviews

"Very nice. Die neue Polygonnetwork ist was für alle die sich unbedingt noch eine Nintendo DS kaufen müssen." {google translation}

- DE:BUG POD, the electronic netlabel watchdog.

"Tokenrove and Retsyn are responsible for the latest release on Polygon Network, a netlabel run by those responsible for the excellent Radio Free Polygon blog. It's a chiptune sound without any assault on the ears, and Snail's Theme in particular is exquisite - a cross between the more melodic BBC Radiophonic stuff and the Tetris theme. It's one of those tunes you leave it on repeat and just turn the volume up a bit when it starts again. Baroquenaphobia sounds very authentic - it could quite easily have been featured in something involving beards and dragons on the NES"

Reviews:

"When I started listening to Televishnu - Mantenna on Polygon, I thought I might be in for something similar to Team Doyobi’s Choose Your Own Adventure, since Pritty sounds a lot like that kind of mix of old c64/Spectrum/videogame sounds and more modern electronic music. Mantenna quickly diverges, however, and generally sticks to catchy analog-sounding riffs with occasionally unpredictable rhythm programming.

"There are also slow, meandering tracks like Grasshoper and Aye-aye. Aye-aye even has 80’s style gated reverb on the drums, with sampled drums fluttering around in the background, making the track feel more dramatic. There’s other original and professional touches in Mantenna."

- Alex Young, Milieu

"Als erstes fand ich dieses Release hier vor und muss sagen: Hammer! Gefaellt mir extrem gut. Kann ich nur weiterempfehlen!" {google translation}

- Aljoscha Marcel Everding, comment on the net music watchdog DE:BUG POD

"Televishnu, Mantenna (The Polygon Network). Voici donc un autre wab qui propose essentiellement de la musique électronique, quoique pas tout le temps. On croise aussi un groupe de furieux Canadiens. Ce dernier projet, Televishnu, est plutôt intéressant, très classique toutefois. Inévitablement, on pense à des influences allemandes seventies, même si le nom du label évoque un peu Aphex Twin." {google translation}
